After several years on the Nearly Open Championship circuit, Senior Management UK NPGA and Australasia NPGA made a momentus decision to form the World Matchplay Tournament. The format of the Tournament was to be sectional play in 2 groups - UK and Australia, - with the winner from each group then playing off against each other to decide the NPGA World Matchplay Champion.
The inaugural winner was the big hitting Irishman for the North Group, Sir John Curran, who triumphed over Australias Tony De Saxe in an epic final played at Metorpolitan GC, Victoria
The North Group again prevailed with UK's Benji Shaw defeating Michel Bouskila at Lake Karrinyup, Western Australia..
The South chalked up their 1st victory with Chris Freeman taking the championship win over Daryl Bowden, played at Kingston Heath, Victoria. Chris also was crowned UK Nearly Open Champion in the same year at Royal Portrush, Ireland....
After a 1 year hiatus, the North reinstated their domination with Gavin "Bling Bling" Holmes defeating Souths Ray Balcomb 3/1 at the magnificent Loch Lomond, Scotland. This Championship added to his Australian Nearly Open victory in 2011 at Metropolitan GC and his 2nd placing UK Open at Carnoustie 2012 - all culminating in taking over NPGA World #1.......
IT IS BACK!!!! After 9 years, in a period that saw smart watches join with smart arses in the bar, Sirri and Alexa come into out lives, joining females worldwide telling us what to do, Netflix, Uber, Amazon, Tesla, Instagam to name a few become BIG business, Brexit gave the UK something to chat about over a cup of tea (or Gin and Tonic) hair fashionistas Boris and Donald took their various governments helm and finally COVID 19 running rampant and is still causing chaos in the world. The NPGA World Matchplay has been resurrected and the World Champion will be decided. Stay tuned for further information.....
