The 21st Edition of the Nearly UK Open was welcomed to Wales for the 1st time in its history. The host clubs, Celtic Manor (Round 1) & Royal Porthcawl (Round 2, 3 & 4) hosted magnificent galleries and had the courses in immaculate condition. With COVID 19 an ever present handicap, the Course Committee led by Tim Bullman, Jon Hunter & Paul McMenemy, ensured that all players were suitably attired with NPGA masks & sanitisers throughout the tournament.
Rookies John Beecroft & Stephen Hunt were duly warmly welcomed into the NPGA and it is hoped that this will be the 1st of many tournaments.
Round 1 saw Russell Lees & Hugh Evans head the leaderboard with 32 points, closely followed by Adrian Langham (31), Gavin Holmes & Jon Hill (29) David Taylor & Tim Bulllman (28). At the other end, a disappointed Ross Hill claimed the Round 1 Shirt of Shame with 17 Points
Round 2 moved to Royal Porthcawl and saw overnight leader Hugh Evans slip down the leaderboard with a mediocore 23 points but Gavin Holmes shot to the top spot with 33 points (total 62) and claim the King O' The Heath trophy. Langham & Lees (60) & Bullman (59) were all there snapping at the leaders heels with Mark Stevens making his charge with 30 points (total 57). Unfortunately it was chocolates to boiled lollies for Hugh - on top one day and then handed the Round 2 Shirt of Shame - Always a great story following Hugh!!!
Round 3 is moving day - and Mark Stevens made the best of the day and headed to the top with a very solid 34 points. This had him leading on 91 followed by Gavin (90), Tim (88), Adrian (87) Rookie Shunty (85) and David Taylor (82). Unfortunately Russell Lee' s highly regimented training programme of "golf fitness" was found to be wanting and his 80 points has him now placed mid field.
The final day is always full on tension, especially knowing that at the end of the day it is time to head home....but the real tension was on the 18th hole where Gavin & Mark battled nerves, the weather and the massive gallery to save all the drama for the final green. Here we saw Mark Stevens claim the Championship and now sit with such luminous NPGA names as Sir Peter O'toole, Sir Adrian Langham, Sir Antoni Jakubowski & Sir Jon Hunter as dual UK Nearly Open Champions. A gallant 2nd goes to Gavin Holmes, whilst Tim Bullman again finished on the podium in 3rd and Paul McMenemy finished with a flourish to take 4th spot and also the Memorial Trophy. The other end saw Jon Hill "justifY' him staying an extra 2 days with the Maurice Flitcroft Trophy and Vinny Thompson securing back to back Gentlemens, truly a wonderful effort. The final Shirt of Shame went to none other than Jon Hunter...oustanding from a Dual Champion.
A Great week of golf saw another great champion....Nearly. Congratulations Mark
